Biodiesel Production Efficiency in Treatment of Solid Waste Landfill Leachate by Algal-Bacterial Co-cultivation

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emrah Ahmet Erkurt, a faculty member of Environmental Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering, Cyprus International University (CIU), initiated a scientific study on the simultaneous treatment of biodiesel especially designed FBR for the development of algae-bacteria symbiotic leachate of solid waste landfill area which is not possible to be treated in conventional wastewater treatment systems.

In this study, optimization of ambient conditions and hydraulic and organic loading in continuous type treatment by using microalga-bacteria co-cultivation of Güngör solid landfill area leaching water is investigated by using pilot scale cascade type 250 L capacity equipped with special led lamps which are not included in the literature.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erkurt said the highest purification efficiency of the microalgae biomass to be obtained after the cultivation conditions will be achieved lipid extraction and biodiesel production will be made as a result of the optimization studies.

Erkurt said “According to the zero waste concept, the biodiesel production reaction by-product glycerol will be fed back into the photo bioreactor.”

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erkurt stated that after the oil extraction process, the residual cell residues containing the pulp will be analysed according to the eligibility criteria of animal nutrient additives. Cost analysis will be done as the last step in the study, he said.

He pointed out that the treatment of the leachate of solid waste landfills in the hazardous wastes category is not carried out in Northern Cyprus. This situation increases the danger to nature and human health every day.

Prof. Dr. Erkurt indicated that implementing such a process, will eliminate a hazardous waste problem and biodiesel production may occur.

He said, "Therefore, the negative impact on nature and human health will be eliminated."

Erkurt stated that the emission values ​​of the exhaust gases produced by the use of biodiesel are much lower than oil-based diesel, therefore, air quality will improve.

Erkurt pointed out that the dependence on oil in the country could be reduced with the implementation of the mentioned process. “In this way, new job opportunities will emerge”, he said.
