CIU Faculty of Agriculture Students conducted field study
Cyprus International University (CIU) Faculty of Agriculture Science and Technologies students organized a field trip to Türkmenköy Station of Agricultural Research Institute affiliated to the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
Prof. Dr. Ahsen Işık Özgüven, CIU Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Technologies Vice Dean, Director of the Department of Plant Production and Technologies, organized the field trip to obtain information about the studies on temperate climate fruit species and conducted on-site research.
Stating that, within the scope of the trip, the students examined the importance of ecology to find out which species or varieties would be possible to grow in the region, Özgüven said, "Our students had the opportunity to observe and observe on site the theoretical information they obtained in the classes." Özgüven pointed out that the students had the chance to examine why some varieties bloom and some are still in the resting period even though they belong to the same species, adding that in this context importance of ecology in agriculture was emphasized.
Noting that the students were also informed that the varieties that cannot be grown in the relevant region physiologically, Özgüven noted that it is economically important to turn to early blooming varieties as a production model, since the island has a temperate climate.
Özgüven also pointed out the importance of early season production in bringing agri-ecotourism to the forefront since this will contribute to island’s becoming a tourist attraction center, and concluded by saying, "These kind of technical trips are very beneficial for our students both in terms of their personal careers and their social relationships."
