CIU Faculty members attended Peace and Conflict Summer Program
CIU Faculty of Law Lecturers attended the Comparative Conflict Studies Program in Serbia
Assist. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Erçakıca and Lecturer Çiçek Göçkün from Cyprus International University (CIU) Faculty of Law. attended the training seminar on "2023 International Comparative Conflict Studies" held in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia.
70 selected participants discussed the issues related to conflict resolution and topics like gender, liberalism, transitional justice, human rights, art and law in different societies experiencing conflict in the training organized as a summer school by the Faculty of Media and Communication (Fakultet za Medije i Komunikacije).
Erçakıca stated that those interested in attending the summer program should submit their applications on the dates announced, and that a certain number of participants are accepted after an elimination process, and added, “A total of 70 participants were selected for the 2023 summer school from among the applications they received from various countries.”
Erçakıca pointed out that the participants choose five different training modules, said, “the training started with the first module on Violence, War and Trauma led by Prof. Dr. Marie Breen-Smyth.”
Dr. Catia C. Confortini from Wellesley College lectured in the module titled Feminist Peace and Security Studies: The Gendered Continuum of Peace and War while Igor Štiks from the University of Edinburgh conducted a training on Citizenship in the 21st Century: Fragile Rights, Unequal Societies, Divided Cities and Global Movements.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Olivera Simic, Faculty Member at Griff University, lectured in the training module on “Justice After Intense Atrocity: The Search for Truth, Punishment and Elimination of Harm”; Dr. Sonja Stojanovıc Gajic from Belgrade University conducted the module titled “Security, Conflict and the Birth of Illiberalism.” Erçakıca stated that after the final session held on July 1, 2023, the event ended with the presentation of certificates to the participants.
Reminding that the summer school is held traditionally every year, Erçakıca shared the information that it will be held again in Belgrade in 2024 with different participants and different modules.
