CIU has gained the right to directly participate in UNILIG

The 2021-2022 Universities Basketball Leagues (UNILIG) organized in cooperation with the TRNC Basketball Federation and the TRNC University Sports Federation, saw the Cyprus International University (CIU) defeat the European University of Lefke (EUL) with a score of 71-62 within the preliminary qualifying round. With this victory obtained during the match played at the CIU Arena, CIU has gained the right to directly participate in UNILIG.

Stating that due to the high number of participants, qualifying matches were held, CIU Arena Acting Sports Director Tarkan Kayaş added that the match played was actually in the form of a final match because the winning team got the ticket to participate directly in the universities league.

Noting that the match was played out very competitively, Kayaş went on to say, "We fought very well with our opponents, and were able to win the match in the last period. From here on, it’s going to be a long-term league with the 6 teams".

Explaining that the team is continuing to intensively prepare for the matches that are to be played at UNILIG, Kayaş went on to say, "I do believe that we will achieve greater success, our team is good, our players are successful. By working harder, we want to achieve a rank in this league".

Advising that at the match that was played there were 150 -persons audience watching the match and that in the future there will be an increase in the number of people attending, Kayaş continued, “We want to establish a team that will walk with its audience, we began our efforts with this, so the support of our fans will reflect on our team positively.

Team coach Ali Emre Erol stated that the male basketball team went out to their first match, and went on to state, “Before technique and tactics, I wanted them to fight and not leave the match, no matter what, and by responding to my request they displayed a big effort and won the match”.

Underlining that they will play basketball matches that the viewers will enjoy, and that each match will be better and more pleasurable, Erol elaborated, “I congratulate both my team and the technical staff for this victory, and I appreciate their effort and the fight they displayed against LAU”.

The first UNILIG match that will begin Monday, 29th November will be played at the CIU Arena between CIU and NEU.
