CIU students grow their own plants
Within the framework of the practice initiated by the Cyprus International University (CIU) Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Technologies, the university provides each of the undergraduate students with plots allocated for this purpose thus allowing them to grow the plants suitable for this purpose.
Assist. Prof. Dr. Ok stated that this authentic application has been carried out in line with the motto " I hear and I forget; I see and I remember; I do and I understand" and thus students can turn their theoretical knowledge into practice.
Pointing out that the necessary tools, equipment and organic fertilizers for the gardening plot were provided by the University, Dr. Ok said, “We assigned each of our students to grow a selected plant. Students will apply all agricultural practices, especially soil preparation, on the lands allocated to them for this purpose.”
Assist. Prof. Dr. Ok, stated that the faculty members of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Technologies closely monitored the students and their plots allocated during this process, said, “However, we did not interfere when they did something wrong. We wanted students to see their own mistakes.”
Dr. Ok said their purpose was to give the students an opportunity to gain experience, and added that they organized a field trip last week to observe the plants when they reached sufficient size.
Hüseyin Ok stated that the application launched this year was highly appreciated by the students and emphasized that next semester the application in question would be conducted in the form of a competition and the top three students would be rewarded.
