“Developments in software engineering are promising”
Cyprus International University (CIU) Engineering Faculty Lecturer Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yöney Kırsal Ever stated that there have been remarkable developments in the fields of software engineering and artificial intelligence in the past decade and said, “Developments in the field of software are very promising harbingers of innovations. These challenge us to leverage their potential for the betterment of humanity while addressing ethics, privacy and security concerns.”
Ever stated that the adoption of 'development' and 'operations' (DevOps) practices and Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipelines in the field of software engineering paves the way for faster development cycles, improved software quality and efficient distribution, and said, "Low-code/no-code development platforms have democratized software creation, allowing non-technical users to participate in the development of applications."
Ever noted that all these developments are of great importance in reshaping industries, society and daily life, and added that as software has become an integral part of every aspect of modern life, there has been an increase in the significance of cyber security and cyber privacy.
Stating that groundbreaking results have been achieved in the field of artificial intelligence regarding deep learning, computer vision, natural language processing (NLP) and speech recognition supported by neural networks, Ever said, “Natural Language Processing software such as BERT and GPT-3 enable human-level language understanding and production skills.”
Ever reminded that these developments catalyze wide-ranging applications across sectors, and added, "While artificial intelligence is rapidly improving diagnosis and patient care in healthcare, it directs algorithmic trading and fraud detection in the field of finance."
Ever also stated that we are witnessing the emergence of autonomous vehicles in the field of transportation. He also said, “Entertainment platforms use artificial intelligence-supported software for creating content. In addition, education is becoming more and more personal and accessible."
In his statement, Ever noted that the role of the diverse and dynamic environment of software engineering studies in shaping the digital world will gradually increase, and said, "The ongoing development of the field, driven by technological developments and social needs, also underlines the necessity of interdisciplinary collaboration, ethical, innovative and sustainable software engineering practices."
