Faculty of Education of Cyprus International University (CIU) organized an event entitled “Role of Philosophy in Education since the Antiquities.”
The event took place at the CIU Education and Graduate Sciences Center where 37 students talked about the views expressed by philosophers who have shaped philosophy and education throughout history.
Faculty of Education Lecturer Assist. Prof. Dr. Osman Emiroğlu, in his opening speech, stated that man throughout the history of thought first tried to understand nature and then himself, to question and give meaning to the life he lived, and stated that he is a unique being who has been able to produce abstract concepts in a way that no living being has been able to produce.
Emiroğlu emphasized that teacher candidates who are expected to be one of the intellectual social groups of the society, have great responsibilities as they are tasked with educating the qualified manpower of the future, and said that the event was organized under the leadership of the students within the framework of the student development approach in order to draw attention to their philosophical foundations.
Expressing that they have adopted a student-centered education approach as a basic principle in practice, Emiroğlu said, “CIU Faculty of Education students succeeded in combining education starting from Ancient Greece with the philosophy of the Middle Ages, enlightenment and the modern age, respectively.”
Speaking about the information conveyed by the students of the Faculty of Education in their studies, Emiroğlu said, "During the historical journey of philosophy, the students examined the impact of the philosophical approaches put forward by many thinkers, philosophers and intellectuals on education."
Emiroğlu also stated that the students had the opportunity to discuss and question the information they learned during the event, where the views of thinkers and philosophers from different historical periods on education were discussed.
