Energy Systems Engineering organizes collegiate wind competition

Energy Systems Engineering Program of Cyprus International University (CIU) Faculty of Engineering, organized the CIU Wind Speed Measurement competition (CIU-WINDCOM). 

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Keyvan Bahlouli,  one of the organizers of the competition, noted that the competition was held in two stages:  "In the first stage of the competition, we asked the students to design a device to measure wind speed using their creativity, analytical thinking, programming and design skills."

Stating that the students performed very well, Bahlouli said, "Abdelrahman Salaheldin Ali Omer and Maher Saleh Falah Alrawashdeh succeeded in ranking the first by developing a device that can measure the speed of the wind, the air temperature and the humidity in the air."

Bahlouli said that the second stage of the competition was held interactively and said, "Because the competition time was limited to 20 minutes, the students were in a race against time."

Assist. Prof. Dr. Neyre Tekbıyık Ersoy, one of the organizers of the competition, stated that the competition sponsored by Saydam Berberoğlu and Kardeşi Ltd.,  enabled the students to experience that anxiety and excitement that competitions entail, and those who succeeded in the competition were given awards and certificates to further motivate them.

Ersoy pointed out that the concept of the competition “measuring wind speed” was a deliberate choice, and added that studies on wind energy should be increased in our country.

Expressing that wind speed measurement is important both for electricity production and in daily life, Ersoy said that anemometers used for this purpose are necessary for weather forecasts, construction projects, determining the wind effect, determining the amount of electricity that can be produced from wind turbines and also in research.

Stating that such competitions are very important in terms of enabling students to translate their theoretical education into practical applications and increase their creativity, Ersoy also stated that they will continue to organize different competitions in the future as the Energy Systems Engineering program.
