Environmental issues concerning the TRNC and the World discussed from a legal perspective

In the Environmental Law Panel organized by the Faculty of Law and Law Club of Cyprus International University (CIU) topics like contributing to the environmental struggle, strengthening this field, protecting the environment, and leaving a healthy environment to the future generations were discussed.

Dean of the Faculty of Law Prof. Dr. Hasan Tunç said in his opening speech, “We hope that our efforts  will make the tools of legal struggle on environmental issues be known, and hope will support other studies carried out in this field.”  Tunç pointed out that all the presentations have been prepared by the club students who will assume legal roles in the future.

Prof. Dr. Hasan Tunç stated that the presentations included in the panel will not only focus on the current environmental issues in the TRNC or the World but will also try to offer realistic solutions for the elimination of these problems. He continued his speech by stating that the environment is the common gain of humanity, and they will be looking at ways of narrowing down or limiting human activities  from a legal point of view so as to protect the environment and pass it on to future generations.

Stating the significance of environmental law, which is a set of rules regulating the relations of humans with nature at national or international levels, Tunç noted that students will present examples regarding the applications of environmental law and how these practices will contribute to a more livable world.

In the panel moderated by Begüm Sena Yavaş, presentations were made on 10 different topics ranging from International Environmental Law to zoning and pollution; from noise pollution to nuclear wars.

In the panel, the presenters and their topics were as such: Aleyna Ersoy— International Environmental Law; Ayşegül Yalçın— Criminal activity of Deliberately Contaminating the Environment; Begüm Sena Yavaş—Criminal Activity of Polluting the Environment by Negligence;

Buse Dönmez—Environmental law and its problems in the TRNC; İrem Aleyna Büyükkalkan—The Effects of Nuclear War on the Environment; Nazife Demir—Criminal Activity of Causing Zoning Pollution; Özay Saraç—Basic Principles of Environmental Law; Senem Ergen—The Environment and What was Missing in the Manavgat Fire; Şimal Çiftçi—Environmental Law; and Mehmet Umur Doğan—Criminal Activity of Causing Noise Pollution.
