First place from the Turkish Society of Radiology
At the Turkish National Radiology Congress organized annually by the Turkish Radiology Association in Antalya, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özüm Tunçyürek of Cyprus International University (CIU) Faculty of Medicine came first with her project named “Artificial intelligence support in cases of intestinal obstruction.”
This year, the main theme of the 43rd Radiology Congress was determined as “radiological imaging in geriatric patients.” Important radiology issues were discussed at the Congress, and “Artificial Intelligence Innovation Competition” was held as well.
CIU Faculty of Medicine Department of Radiology Faculty Member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tunçyürek was nominated the winner among the twelve finalists, and she also contributed to the congress with four other presentations.
Dr. Tunçyürek explained that “ileus” known as intestinal obstruction is described as intestinal knot especially observed in elderly patients, and that it is a common health problem that causes complaints of abdominal pain and vomiting. Tunçyürek added that “Computed tomography (CT) scan is required for the diagnosis. From time to time, the clues in this examination may be overlooked by the radiology specialist. However, it will make it easier for the radiologist to use artificial intelligence so as not to overlook any of the clues.”
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tunçyürek noted that artificial intelligence helps people in many fields today due to the rapid increase in population, the workload of radiology specialists has also increased, and accordingly, they may have difficulties in making the correct diagnosis due to the intensity at the point of diagnosis.
Emphasizing that artificial intelligence helps to reduce the workload of the radiologist, Tunçyürek said, "Artificial intelligence makes the work of doctors easier by selecting commonly observed radiological signs."
