As a guest of the CIU Faculty of Law, CTP Member of Parliament Fikri Toros gave information in relation to the registration process of hellim

CIU Faculty of Law organized an event “The Registration of Halloumi with the European Union”, where at the event, CTP Member of Parliament and Former President of the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce, Fikri Toros, spoke in relation to the registration process of halloumi and the developments that are to follow.

Explaining in short that PDO is sign of origin, Toros went on to explain that with this geographical indication a product that originates from a particular region is defined, and with this the quality is specified and along with the other characteristics, the source of origin is referred to, and that this region is indicated via this industrial property right.

Explaining that the indications of origin can have two different forms of evaluation, Toros went on to state, “One is defined as the sign of origin and the other as the location of the indication. The origin; is when the production, processing and packaging of the product is done in a designated location. The geography is established when at least one of these transactions takes place in this location”.

Noting that the main aim of the registration process is to protect the local product in question, Toros advised that in this sense, this product can only be produced in that geographical location under that name.

Stating that anonymous ownership protects the producers as well as the name, Toros continued, "Anonymous ownership provides regional development, and with dynamic marketing, it increases the added value of the product, which in turn strengthens the producer".

“The registration process of Hellim within the EU”
Stating that EU member Republic of Cyprus, made a PDO application to the European Commission for “Halloumi” in 2008, Toros explained that Turkish Cypriot producers under the leadership of the Turkish Cypriot Chamber in the north of the island, producing under the name of hellim, were later included in this application.
