Important representation from CIU Petroleum and Natural Gas Club
The CIU Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering Club, affiliated to the Social Activities Coordinators Office within the Cyprus International University (CIU) Student Development and Counseling Center, has become a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), one of the world's largest professional societies.
SPE is a professional non-profit organization with more than 119,000 members in 138 countries is engaged in the exploration and production of oil, gas and related energy resources,
With offices in Calgary, Dallas, Dubai, Houston, Kuala Lumpur and London, SPE also has a significant technical and professional structure that provides opportunities for knowledge exchange through education, publications and joint programs organize at face-to-face or online events.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. M. Hakan Özyurtkan, lecturer in the Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering Program under the Department of Mechanical Engineering, stated that provided certain conditions are met, SPE allows the establishment of Student Chapters in universities with Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering programs. “For some time, we have been working to establish an SPE student club at our university. As a result of these initiatives, we submitted our application and got approval from SPE International for our student club beginning June 2023.”
Özyurtkan noted that being a member of this international organization, gives CIU students the privilege to benefit from SPE's news channels, events and programs.
Özyurtkan underlined that this membership allows students to be informed about sectoral developments, possible international scholarships, internships and job announcements first hand and said, “They will have the opportunity to transfer the Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering education they received at our university to the international arena through the SPE student club.”
Reminding that there are various conferences, symposiums and workshops organized by the organization every year, Özyurtkan shared the information that CIU students will be included in the international SPE student club activities that are traditionally organized every year, and added that they will also have the right to participate in all these SPE events and organizations.
Özyurtkan emphasized the importance of having an SPE student club which gives the students of that university the chance to interact with international Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering programs, and said, “As a department, we fully believe that the SPE CIU student chapter will contribute greatly to the academic and professional development of our students.”
