It is important that the diversity of employees within the Tourism and Hotel sector increases

Cyprus International University (CIU) School of Tourism and Hotel Management academic staff Assist. Prof. Dr. Olusegun Olugbade, reminded that the accommodation and travel industries require a lot of effort, and that succeeding in this sector will provide the customers unforgettable experiences, and that this success is affiliated with the professionalism and diversity of the employees.

Advising that the nature of this industry requires multicultural contented high-quality social interactions with customers and colleagues, Olugbade expressed however that within the industry, problems with diversity and inclusion are prevalent.

Explaining that within the sector, individuals from the African, Asian and Ethnic Minorities (AAEM) group are under-represented in the accommodation and travel sector, Assist. Prof. Dr. Olugbade went on to say, “This problem is one that has still not been rectified, including within the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

Olugbade stated that in many parts of the world, accommodation, travel and entertainment businesses are working to develop and implement diversity and inclusion strategies, and highlighted that despite such efforts, necessary progress has not been achieved in the establishment of a diverse and inclusive working environment.

In his statement, Assist. Prof. Dr. Olugbade pointed out that within the framework of the TRNC’s multicul tural mosaic and rapidly changing customer requests, the importance of implementing both a diverse and inclusive workforce in an effort to increase the productivity of the accommodation, travel and entertainment sectors.

Olugbade advised that in the event of the strategies in question being applied, that the benefits of a diverse and inclusive workforce would be felt, and noted that there will be an increase in efficiency with the advantage of diverse abilities and competitive advantages.

Underlining that it is important that multiculturalism and diversity within our countries tourism and hotel sector must be understood, Olugbade explained that all planning should be made within this scope.
