Math Fest at Haspolat Elementary School

Faculty of Education, Department of Classroom Teaching of Cyprus International University organized a “Math Fest” at Haspolat Elementary School.

The Math Fest has been organized 4 times so far in the Fall and Spring semesters of every school year.  

Within the scope of the Mathematics Education course taught by the Chairperson  of the Department of Basic Education, Assist. Prof. Dr. Sarem Özdemir,  the junior year students in the Department of Classroom Teaching have been organizing this activity full of educational games  in accordance with the  curriculum followed at the elementary school. 

In the activity, which was held for a total of forty-four pupils including first graders at Haspolat Primary School, the safety and developmental characteristics of children were prioritized during the preparation of the materials related to the games.

Özdemir stated that attention is paid not only to the reinforcement of mathematics, but also to the formation of the root values of respect, love, patience and cooperation, and said that the most important aim of the games is to develop a positive attitude towards mathematics in early childhood, which is a discipline of disposition and system.

Özdemir also said that starting from the pre-school period, children must first love mathematics in order to show love and interest in mathematics, and added, "This can be possible through games that children see as their best fun activity that keep them busy.”  

Özdemir pointed out that the TRNC curriculum is very intense and centered on classroom activities, and noted that this event has been organized to ensure children can also enjoy right to play games. 

Özdemir pointed out that CIU Department of Classroom Teaching students not only took part in the implementation of a theoretical course, but as  prospective teachers, they  had the chance to meet with the pupils.

Özdemir finally stated that pre-service teachers have achieved interactive work experience with primary school pupils and school teachers and said, “We are always ready to stand by our society with such activities. We are aware of the responsibility our schools have in  moving forward, and we will always support them to the best of our capacity.”
