The memorial service was held in front of the CIU Student Affairs Building. Among those in attendance were the Rector of CIU Prof. Dr. Halil Nadiri, Vice Rectors, Faculty members and students.
The ceremony started with a moment of silence and the National Anthem and was followed by CIU Rector Prof. Dr. Nadiri’s speech on behalf of the CIU family. Dr. Nadiri said, "We will overcome this great pain caused by this disaster together in solidarity, and we shall heal our wounds together."
Nadiri reminded that the students in the CIU First Aid and Emergency Aid program worked with all their might in the earthquake zone and said, "I would like to thank both our students and our staff for their support."
Nadiri said they were in contact with the students in different provinces in Turkey as well as the neighboring countries and were cooperating with the authorities in order to see what they can do to help meet the needs of these students and learn about their well-being. For that matter, Nadiri said, together with the academic and administrative units, they were closely following this matter.
In closing, Nadiri expressed his condolences to the families and relatives of the students who died as a result of such an unfortunate event in the prime of their lives, and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
In her speech, Student Council President Ceren Çeliker stated that the earthquake in Kahramanmaraş, which affected eleven provinces, caused wounds in everyone's hearts, and said, "Unfortunately, perhaps for the first time in our lives, we felt desperate and desolate and that we could not reach out to offer a hand."
After her speech, Çeliker also recited a poem in memory of the students who passed away. The commemoration ceremony ended in the area where the students laid carnations next to the names of the students who passed away.
