CIU Faculty of Medicine welcomes 2023 new incoming classes
CIU Faculty of Medicine, one of the most preferred faculties of medicine in the TRNC, has started to accept new students for the 2023-2024 academic year.
CIU Faculty of Medicine Dean Prof. Dr. Güldal Mehmetçik stated that they are advancing with the aim of producing modern scientists in the field of medicine, and their main aim is to follow the technological advancements in the world, to develop and apply treatment methods tailored to the needs of the individual, to accelerate and to minimize errors, to produce continuously, to contribute to scientific data and academic resources.
Prof. Dr. Güldal Mehmetçik stated that English is the medium of instruction in the Faculty which consists of 3 main programs: Basic Medical Sciences, Surgical Medical Sciences and Internal Medicine. Mehmetçik stated that CIU Faculty of Medicine students take the “Early Clinical Observations” course in the first two years adding thus the students start their clinical training as of their freshman year.
Mehmetçik also stated that the curriculum is comprised of "Study Modules" where every student is directed to conduct scientific research within the scope of their studies. Giving the information that the scientific projects prepared within the scope of the study modules are coordinated by the faculty members, she said, "Our students will not only be graduates of the medical discipline but will also gain the basic skills to design and conduct scientific projects. They can participate in at least 2-3 research projects during their education."
Noting that the training is carried out in advanced laboratories with a dynamic and experienced staff, Mehmetçik said that in addition to the Clinical Skills Laboratories located within the premises of the faculty, there are also Molecular Medicine, Biochemistry, Neurological Sciences, Cell Culture, Microbiology, Neurophysiology and Hemodynamics Laboratories.
Mehmetçik said the 4th, 5th and 6th-year students of the CIU Faculty of Medicine take their classes at Adana Turgut Noyan Application and Research Center of Başkent University adding while the 4th and 5th-year classes consist of clinical internships, the 6th, i.e., the final year physician candidates work as interns.
Talking about internships, Mehmetçik said, "Our students are involved in patient training, clinical visits, patient preparation, outpatient clinical visits, observing in the operating room, seminar and ‘article’ hours, and also clinics hold joint meetings."
Mehmetçik explained that TRNC nationals who graduated from TRNC high schools and T.R. nationals who graduated from a high school in the TRNC are eligible to apply to the program based on the score they received in the Student Placement and Scholarship Ranking Exam or their diploma grade point averages. She also said that students can also enroll in the program provided they document the results of the GCE A'Level, GCE AS Level, and IGCSE-GCSE O'Level exams.
