World Water Day

On the occasion of the World Water Day which is celebrated every year on March 22nd by the United Nations,, CIU Faculty of Engineering lecturer Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şifa Doğan talked about the significance of water preservation.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doğan said, " Every year on March 22 the United Nations  organizes some events to draw attention to the importance of preservation of water resources and sustainable water resources management and the theme of World Water Day 2025 is 'Protection of Glaciers'."

Drawing attention to the global effects of climate change, Doğan said, "While climate change is associated with the decrease in precipitation levels, droughts and floods observed on our island, it is also manifested in the form of rapid melting of glaciers, destruction of ecosystems, landslides and rising sea levels in other parts of the world."

Doğan stated that rising temperatures because of climate change disrupt precipitation patterns and the entire water cycle, and hence water, the source of life, which has its own natural cycle is becoming unpredictable due to climate change.

Dr. Doğan emphasized the fact  that the increase in water pollution poses an additional threat.  The pollution of water resources due to various reasons, primarily agricultural and industrial activities, reduces the quality of usable water and necessitates planning that includes water treatment.

Doğan also had some suggestions to come up with  doable solutions, and concluded by saying, "All countries should do their part in combating climate change, most importantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating a sustainable water resources management plan.  These are the most important steps to be taken in combating the global and local water crisis."
