All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights
Cyprus International University (CIU) Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean Prof. Dr. Metin Karadağ, speaking within the scope of 10th December Human Rights Day, stated, "This date is the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the UN in 1948".
Reminding that Human Rights Day is celebrated with a different theme each year, Karadağ noted that the Human Rights Day maintains fundamental ideals such as drawing the attention of the world to the issue of human rights, to keep the value and function of the Universal Declaration on the agenda for all humanity, and to encourage more thinking in relation to how every individual can stand up for rights every day.
In his statement, Prof. Dr. Karadağ went on to say, “With the celebration of this day, it is aimed to keep alive idealism and functional dynamism that are sensitive against the colonial spirit, that comes from the capital of dominant powers”.
Reminding of the famous statement from the declaration "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights", Karadağ explained that the declaration declares that everyone has as a human naturally the inalienable rights, regardless of their race, color, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth, or other status.
Prof. Dr. Karadağ noted that the declaration was prepared by people from different parts of the world, who had different legal, administrative, and cultural backgrounds, and is accepted as universal values for all the people and nations, and also went on to advise, “In the context of human rights and democracy, these values are ideal standards in terms of social peace and success. It is a pluralistic democracy which would be the only system to crown such values”.
Highlighting that every concession that is made from democracy, is a new path in the violation of human rights, Karadağ concluded, "The basic criterion for living humanely, fairly, and peacefully, is to make democracy a way of life in an equal and just order”.
